Post-concussion syndrome is a condition that results after a person suffers a concussion, also known as a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), after a blow to the head. The brain, which is surrounded by fluid within the skull, will hit the front of the skull and then the back causing the trauma. After the initial trauma the brain goes through a physiological process that causes symptoms of dizziness, headache, nausea, and fatigue. Most people will recover from a concussion without medical intervention however, if symptoms persist beyond three weeks, a person will be diagnosed with Post-Concussion Syndrome.
Common post-concussion symptoms are headache, dizziness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and nausea. These symptoms are debilitating and prevent a person from returning to work, sport, or their recreational activities. A physical therapist will complete a comprehensive evaluation to determine all the factors contributing to one’s post-concussive state, establish a plan of care, provide activity recommendations, and help a person return to their prior level of function.
If you are experiencing symptoms after a concussion or have been diagnosed with Post-Concussion Syndrome contact your physician and get a referral for physical therapy. We at Mansfield PT and Wellness are here to help!
